The Dubrovnik Chessmen are among the most iconic and admired chess sets in history, born from Yugoslavia’s desire to create a culturally distinct set for the 1950 Chess Olympiad in Dubrovnik. Designed by artist Pero Poček, the original Dubrovnik 1950 set broke away from traditional Western chess aesthetics, eliminating religious symbols and embracing clean, balanced forms that emphasized playability and elegance.
Handcrafted in limited numbers, the Dubrovnik 1950 quickly became legendary for its flowing curves, stable bases, and unmistakable knight design. Its reputation grew further when Bobby Fischer famously declared it the finest chess set he had ever played with, cementing its place in chess history. Over time, the design evolved into notable variations such as Dubrovnik II and Dubrovnik Minčeta, each refined for faster and more competitive play while preserving the spirit of the original.
