Origins and Name
The name "Токарь Теичъ" translates to "Turner Teich," where "Tokar" refers to a turner or lathe worker in Russian, highlighting the woodworking expertise that characterizes the set. "Teich" could either be a nod to a master craftsman or a traditional branding mark, signifying its association with a specific artisan or workshop lineage.
Design Features
The chess pieces in the Токарь Теичъ set are notable for their unique, tall, and slender designs, which are distinctly different from other Soviet style chess set patterns. The knights feature is more like a Staunton style, while the bishop has the miter cuts, never seen in any of the other Russian styles. The pawns and other pieces exhibit symmetrical elegance, with an emphasis on balance and playability.
The Indian Chess Company has collaborated with renowned chess collector Chess Praxis and has masterfully reproduced the Токарь Теичъ chess set in ebony and boxwood. The original research for Tsarist Staunton Chessmen has been done by Chuck Grau and Sergey Kovalenko and have beautifully written the piece on Chuck's website(check references).
These reproductions capture the set's iconic tall, slender design and intricate detailing, offering chess enthusiasts a timeless blend of historical elegance and modern luxury. Perfect for collectors and players alike, this set is a tribute to the enduring legacy of classic chess design.

The overall quality of these chess pieces is outstanding, with an excellent tactile feel. They are comfortable to handle and clearly well-crafted. I am particularly fond of the material used for the white pieces—its appearance is wonderfully antique and refined, giving the set a timeless character. The pieces are so beautifully made that they feel less like game components and more like true works of art.
I am very pleased to own this beautiful set... Thank you very much Gurpreet for your assistance and friendship!

This Turner Teich repro is one of the most impressive reproductions I have seen in terms of craftsmanship, detail and accuracy. The original set is rare and expensive, no way I can have one. I'm happy that Gurpreet and Chess Praxis collaborated to make this reproduction set available so average collectors like me can own and enjoy it.
Quite accurate reproduction of a Tsarist Staunton made by a St. Petersburg wood turner named Teich before the Revolution. 4” Kings. Wide bases. Hefty pieces. Nicely made and finished, though I’m not a fan of the brown. Your mileage may vary. 2.5” squares are the minimum size I’d use for this stout set.
