The 1950s' chess set used by Mikhail Botvinnik, a dominant figure in mid-20th-century chess, featured a classic Soviet style known for its practical and minimalistic design. Crafted with Sheesham wood for dark side and boxwood for lighter side , the set emphasized functionality over ornate details, with pieces that were weighted for stability and shaped to be easily distinguishable for quick gameplay. The knights often had a solid, robust profile, with bishops and rooks showing minimal embellishments. This style reflected the Soviet aesthetic of the time, where simplicity and efficiency in design mirrored the broader cultural emphasis on discipline and focus.
